The Secret Julie Garwood 9780671744212 Books

I loved this book years ago and decided to read it again to see if I still felt the same way. I do!

When 4 year old Lady Judith met 5 year old Francis Catherine at a festival held on the border between Scotland and England, they had no idea that their friendship wasn't supposed to happen. For years afterward they would meet each summer at the games and it was if they had never been separated. After they got older, Francis Catherine told Judith of her fear that she would someday die in childbirth like her mother and grandmother. She had Judith promise that she would be there when she gave birth. Judith immediately began learning all that she could of childbirth so that she could be helpful when the time came. Years later, she makes the trip to the Scottish Highlands to be with her friend as she waits to give birth. Of course, being English, she was not initially welcomed into the community where Francis Catherine lived.

Is this story well represented by historical facts? No, not at all. Does it bother me? Nope. This isn't a time period that I prefer and I know little about it. I do realize that it is 'cleaned up' a bit and that is okay with me. Why do I like it? I loved the heroine's "Hey, you're not going to stop me" attitude. I really like a dark, brooding hero with a soft heart who wants what is best for his people. And I really, really loved the intense friendship between the two girls. And, as always, I love Garwood's gift for humor and witty dialogue. I'm so glad that I reread this book and will likely read it again in a few years.

The Secret Julie Garwood 9780671744212 Books Reviews

I love this book. I read it AT LEAST once each year. I bought it in print and e-published and audio. You'll laugh, cry, and be amazed by the difference one person can make on the world around her. Julie Garwood does not disappoint.
The most amazing thing is the inner beauty of a young woman who suffered such loss and yet holds only love and understanding for others-the ability to finally, as an adult, to stand up for those she loves or simply stand against ugliness in others is downright inspiring. I appreciate the respect of the elders when leading them to see another viewpoint, and utter humility in embarrassing herself to spare the feelings of others. This woman is of such good character and spunky and innocent and strong. The trilogy is an absolute must read. They only get better. Start here!
Judith Hampton has promised her Scottish childhood friend that she would be at her side when she gives birth to her first child. And no one is going to stop her from keeping that promise. But Judith has another reason to be at her friend's side in the Highlands. To meet the father she never knew. Nothing prepares her for the sight of the Scottish barbarian who is to escort her into his land----Iain Maitland--a man more compelling than any she had ever seen before.

Iain is perplexed by her sprightly defiance, bemused by her tender nature. He knows nothing would wrench her from him--not even the truth about her father.
When I was in high school (20 years ago), I really loved Julie Garwood books. I guess I've grown out of them because this one was so formulaic it bordered on boring - I find that almost all romance books I read these days are ridiculous to me. Here's the formula

Take 1 tall, muscular, perfect looking man
Take 1 small, beautiful woman
mix in a little spirit and boldness for the woman
mix in some chauvinistic "I'm here to protect you" for the man

This creates a whole lot of "lust at first sight"
also required is traveling outside together for long distances - riding on the same horse with the woman in front of the man - camping outdoors (where the woman apparently never needs to pee)
now add in some scowling for the hero and some hurt feelings for the lady
which of course turns into "I'm in love with you and want to marry you" after just a week.

Now - once they're married and things seem to be going well, add in a misunderstanding, or a secret, or one of them not telling their plans to the other person. This results in some sort of danger for the perfect heroine in which the man has to rescue her, and then they ride off together and realize again how much they love each other. Make sure all of this happens in just a month or two. Almost always end your book with the heroine realizing she's pregnant (although it didn't' happen in this book).

Seriously - this is the plot of 90% of historical romances. Why can't anyone do something different!
An audio review.

I loved The Secret and after listening to it for the first time and re-reading it for the 20 billionth time, I think I love it more.

Judith is a strong and feisty English woman whose best friend is a Scot. When she's asked to attend her friends birthing of her first child, she does not hesitate to pack her bags.

Ian is Laird and as a favour to his brother offers to collect the English woman. Ian thinks his brother is daft giving in to his woman and scoffed at his devotion and need to make her happy.

When the two meet there is an instant attraction, but a Scottish Laird and an English lass is not a good alliance.

Judith has a secret that could ruin everything. Ian knows that by taking an English bride he's asking for trouble...but can't seem to stop himself. Only the two of them can decide if their love is worth the sacrifice.

I laughed so hard at this one and got some very strange looks on the train. I'm pretty sure I had a goofy grin on my face for most this one.

The storyline is captivating, the characters lovable and the love story enough to make me sigh. I will definitely be listening to more in the future.
