Wayfarer Passenger Alexandra Bracken Books

pooled ink Reviews:

WAYFARER concludes this time-traveling duology with a dynamic chase filled with feuds, betrayal, and love lost and found, sending all players sprinting around the globe to the beat of a ticking drum. With a heavier cast of violence and a softer glance of romance this story digs down to the roots and unearths the impossible.

This book was plenty of great fun especially if you enjoyed the first book but hoped for more action. There was plenty going on, lots of gunfire and adrenaline and puzzles and cryptic deals, and yet somehow it still felt a bit slow. Although I definitely enjoyed getting to know all sorts of new characters such as Etta’s father, the Belladonna, Julian, Li Min, etc., as well as getting to know more about some of the secondary characters from the previous book.

And the ending was pretty well done in the sense of wrapping things up for the main characters/the characters you’ll have come to care about. So that was nice.

Just overall it was slow and I couldn't get into it so it was a bit of a struggle for me to get through.

Oh, but just a heads up: if you swooned for the romance in PASSENGER between Etta and Nicholas then just know that it takes a very long time for them to meet up again.

Wayfarer Passenger Alexandra Bracken Books Reviews

I had mixed feelings about Wayfarer. Alexandra Bracken is a spectacular writer and she know how to work imagery in such a way that I feel the world and setting being slowly constructed in my mind. Unfortunately, it took way too long to pick up and fill my mind with thoughts of wanting to know what happens next.

Etta and Nicholas got separated in timelines at the end of Passenger, and we were able to see them continue to grow without each other.

Unfortunately, their separation made Nicholas way too ugh for my case. Whenever I would reach a chapter that was told in his perspective I found my groaning and rolling my eyes. It is great and annoying. Great because it means Bracken knows how to properly express Nicholas’ feelings of desperation and foolishness through written word. It was annoying, because I wanted to slap Nicholas for some of his actions.

On the other hand, I felt that Etta grew as she followed her own sense of rightness instead of embarking on a adventure based on just saving a mother who didn’t want to be found. Etta’s vision upon and she became selfish, and made actions on her own terms. (*clap clap clap*)

Wayfarer was more fleshed out than Passenger, but the lack of fleshing in Passenger makes sense after Wayfarer. In Wayfarer the reader can finally connect all the mysterious mystery things from book one. LIKE THE SHADOWS and ROSE WHAT IS YOUR MASTER PLAN EXPLAIN WHY YOU DOING THIS.

My other small complaint is that the shadows were mentioned and slightly explain in the passing, but I wish it could have been more dominant in the story. The Shadows were the key force behind all the occurrence in the time traveler’s lives and I felt like it was barely scraped. It kinda felt like Look the Shadows, they are this and came from that! There they are again, and now they are gone BYE.

Alexandra Bracken also included more diverse characters into the Passenger/Wayfarer crew. Including a Chinese character, soft natured boys, and gay women.
After Etta is orphaned by her natural time due to a shift in the timeline, Nicholas makes plans with Etta’s mom to find where she was dumped off in time and continue on their journey to reclaim the astrolabe.

What I liked

While I feel like Passenger was mostly about Nicholas and Etta getting to know each other on their journey to find the astrolabe, I love the fact that in this sequel you get to learn so much more about other characters in the books.

In particular, I love getting to see more of Sophia. In Passenger, it seemed like she was primarily concerned with pleasing Cyrus Ironwood, but she seems different after being beaten by the Thorns and left for dead in the Syrian desert. She is her same fierce, angry self, but she seems to actually grow to care for Nicholas and Etta. I love her no nonsense attitude. I want only the best things for Sophia after this book, which is a very different feeling than I had after reading Passenger.

I enjoyed learning more about Rose. Seeing her motivations for why she sent Etta on this mission unprepared and the things that she had to do to set things in motion was interesting and sad. None of it really helped me like her more, she's just too cold for me. But it's definitely undeniable that she cares about Etta, cold or not.

The new characters in this book are wonderful as well! Henry, Julian, the Belladonna. All of them are super fun to meet.

I feel like there is a lot of action going on in this book. It definitely doesn't suffer from the sequel slump. There isn't a dull moment in this book, which is great because it's over 500 pages!

I loved all the settings that we get to see in this book as well. From the Crusades to the reign of the last tsar of Russia, it was all super fascinating to see in this book. I'm almost sad it's not a trilogy because just imagine what other awesome historical moments we could see!

What I disliked

The only thing that I can say I really disliked about this book was the fact that Nicholas and Etta were separated for nearly the entire book. I love the relationship they build in Passenger and I feel cheated that I didn't get very much Nicholas and Etta time. I don't understand why it seems to be a thing in YA for the couple to be separated for long periods of time in the sequels. Distance doesn't make this heart grow fonder.

Overall, this was an excellent sequel. The characters were amazing, the history was amazing, and it was intense! If you like Passenger, definitely don't miss this conclusion! If you're into time-travel, pirates, and history, check out this series if you haven't already!
